A Gombe youngster eyes our photographer while munching on some greens.
Mothers and infants are pretty much always in physical contact.

Big eyes take in the world -- or at least Gombe National Park.

Jane Goodall observed that an attentive, relaxed mothering style seemed to be positive for youngsters.
Chimpanzees often remind us of ourselves.

Hunters do not kill baby chimps for meat. Instead they take the infants and try to sell them as pets or roadside attractions. La Vielle is a somewhat depressed chimpanzee. For years she was afraid to step off concrete -- no doubt a result of early training by a human. But one day she took the plunge and stepped on the grass. Today she likes to spend hours in "Gregoire's garden."Photo: Courtesy JGI-France

Gregoire: 1942-2008
Sad sight: Jane met an emaciated and lonely Gregoire in 1990.
Gregoire was happier and healthier after being airlifted to JGI's Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center.
Gregoire became internationally known as the subject of a National Geographic photo cover in 1995.
Gregoire spent daytime hours in his special garden with his friend La Vielle.
Gregoire was beyond happy to get fruit for his 60th birthday.

Gregorie enjoyed attention from Jane and sanctuary veterinarian and manager Rebeca Atencia.
One of his favorite passtimes was buttoning shirts.
