Africa Programs Intern

Description: Work on our creative team to conserve wildlife in Tanzania, Uganda, Guinea and the Congo Basin. Interns provide day to day administrative support, carry out small research projects, assist with public outreach projects, and process information requests. While many of the intern's duties are administrative, this position offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at an international wildlife research, conservation and education not-for-profit.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a BA or equivalent degree. Preference will be given to individuals with knowledge of African primate conservation, environmental education, community conservation/sustainable development programs and the commercial bushmeat trade. In addition:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent writing ability
  • Computer knowledge
  • Initiative and ability to work independently
  • French translation and writing skills are favorable

Internship, Office of the Founder – Global

Here is your chance to intern in JGI's Office of the Founder-Global and help support Dr. Goodall's international lecture tour. We are looking for a high energy individual for this hands-on opportunity to not only see but contribute to the tireless work of Dr. Jane Goodall.

Description: The successful candidate will be a current university student or recent graduate with strong communication and public outreach skills. Interest in and knowledge of Dr. Goodall’s work is a must. Preference will be given to a candidate who can start in late August, 2009 or even earlier. Flexible work schedule available. JGI headquarters are located across the street from the Ballston metro station in Arlington, Virginia. This is an unpaid position but college credit is available.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Help track appearance invitations
  • Help organize logistics for Dr. Goodall’s US public appearances
  • Assist with Dr. Goodall’s lectures in the Washington, DC area
  • Create a system to organize and archive materials collected during Dr. Goodall’s lecture tours

Other responsibilities:

  • Help process incoming mail
  • Respond to auction item and autograph requests
  • Assist with processing tour expenses
  • Coordinate book shipments and outgoing mailings

Roots & Shoots Internship, National Office

Roots & Shoots®, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, seeks one full-time intern for our National Office. Founded by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE and a group of Tanzanian students, the global Roots & Shoots program is about empowering young people to take action through service projects—creating positive change for people, animals and the environment.

Roots & Shoots interns assist the National Office staff with the day-to-day administration of the Roots & Shoots program, including member services, program marketing, website maintenance and outreach. There is a mixture of administrative work and program development, implementation and writing. These positions offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at a fast-growing nonprofit organization, as well as the opportunity to effect lasting change on an evolving program. Interns work closely with staff as part of a dynamic team of individuals who share a commitment to high-quality work.

Intern responsibilities include:

  • First line of contact for general program information requests by phone, mail, email and fax (high volume of email correspondence)
  • Coordinating the 2009 Roots & Shoots Day of Peace communications and photos with the National Office team, planning for 2010 Day of Peace
  • Working with National Program Manager to research and prepare proposals to potential funders
  • Writing content for Roots & Shoots newsletter, eNewsletter and website (approximately one piece of writing each month)
  • Administering interactive, member-based website to ensure quality and usability
  • Archiving news articles and images
  • Reviewing and approving project reports received from members through the website
  • Facilitating membership fulfillment through database maintenance
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of the program's membership plan, as needed
  • Interacting with the public and representing the program at events, as needed (potential for participation in Dr. Goodall’s lecture tour events)
  • Providing phone coverage, on a rotating basis, to JGI's receptionist two days each week
  • Potential for completing 1-2 long term projects based on intern's interests and program need
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidates will possess:

  • An interest in empowering youth to make a positive difference by offering in-office support to Roots & Shoots members and groups
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, grant writing experience a plus
  • Strong computer skills and Internet savvy (Microsoft Office and prior database experience preferred)
  • The ability and willingness to be flexible in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Initiative and ability to work both independently and cooperatively
  • Volunteer and/or service learning experience preferred

Hours are full-time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday (with flexibility). The position is unpaid, but academic credit can be arranged. Work will be based out of the JGI-USA in Arlington, Virginia (Ballston Metro).

 Development Internship

Description:
The Jane Goodall Institute is seeking two Development interns. Each intern will assist with various fundraising initiatives and with day-to-day administration in support of the Development staff. While many of the intern's duties are administrative, this position offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at an international wildlife research, conservation and education not-for-profit.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Complete 1-2 long term projects based on intern's interests and staff needs
  • Handle general information requests and member queries by phone, mail, email, and fax
  • Assist Development team with administrative needs and special projects
  • Facilitate membership & major gifts fulfillment
  • Maintain donor database
  • Assist with cultivation events
  • General administration for the Development department
  • Provide front desk coverage (on a rotating basis) for JGI's receptionist
Qualifications:
  • Enthusiasm for conservation and environmental education
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and prior database experience preferred)
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced and constantly changing work environment

International Roots & Shoots Internship--Tanzania

Location: Dar es Salaam and Moshi, Tanzania
Status: flexible, applications accepted on a rolling basis. Next available opening April 2011.
Duration:
Minimum 6-month commitment.

Description:

  • Support local R&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.
  • Represent R&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization’s events.
  • Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual R&S events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and Roots & Shoots week.
  • Develop and implement a volunteer project in collaboration with local R&S groups.
  • Assist with on-going activities such at the R&S Scholarship Program and Yatima Orphanage
  • Assist with general office administrative tasks

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Roots & Shoots, community development, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, administrative support
  • The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
  • Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus
  • Must be 21 years of age or older

Terms: Intern contributes the following fee to the Jane Goodall Institute: $2,900 for 6 months and $350 for every additional month. This fee will help to cover living and interning expenses during your time in Tanzania.
